The Official Litter Letter for Purebred Cats

Cats registered with the LOOF (Livre Officiel des Origines Félines, the French feline registry) must have an official name starting with the letter assigned to their year of birth. It’s a tradition shared with pedigree dogs for nearly a century.

In 2026, the official letter is B: Biscotte, Basile, Bijou, Brioche… Turn on the “purebred cat” option in the generator to see only names starting with the right letter.

💡 The official alphabet skips six letters deemed too rare: K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z. And if you fall for a name outside the letter, you can prefix it with the year’s letter and an apostrophe, for example B’Java or B’Origami.

How to Choose the Perfect Name for Your Cat

A good cat name is short, easy to call out, and fits your cat's personality perfectly. Here are five tips to help you get it right from the start.

  • Short and Easy to Call

One to two syllables, ideally ending in a clear vowel sound (Filou, Nala, Moka). Cats pick up on sharp, high-pitched sounds more easily, and names you can call out in one quick burst work best.

  • Avoid Mix-Ups

Pick a name that doesn't sound like a common command ("No," "Come here") or the name of another member of your household. A distinctive sound helps your cat understand you're talking to them.

  • Match Their Personality

Watch your cat for a few days before deciding: a calm, laid-back cat might become a Pacha, while a bundle of energy could be a Volt or a Pixel. The right name is often obvious once it matches their personality.

  • Take Inspiration from Their Coat

Ginger like Caramel, gray like Misty, black like Licorice, white like Snowflake: your cat's coat color is a ready-made source of names that are sweet and easy to remember.

  • Test It Out Loud

Call the name out loud a few times, in different rooms. If it's pleasant to say, easy to shout from the backyard, and makes you smile, you've found the one.

And to Welcome Your Kitten Home…

A new name, a new companion: set up a cozy corner just for them.

Welcoming a kitten means preparing its arrival with care: a corner of its own, a bowl, a scratching post… and a name. Naming your cat is often the very first gesture of attachment, the one that turns a little stranger into a member of the family.

In the first days, let them explore their territory at their own pace. Watch their coat, their energy, and their little quirks: quite often, the right name ends up choosing itself, because it fits them. A short, easy-to-repeat name will also help them recognize it quickly.

To get everything ready before the big day, follow our guide on welcoming a cat into an apartment: arrival checklist, setup, and the first days. All that will be left is finding the perfect name with the generator above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What letter should a cat name start with in 2026?

In 2026, the official letter for pedigreed cats registered with France's LOOF is B: Basile, Biscotte, Bijou, Brioche, and so on. For a cat without papers, there's no rule to follow: you're completely free to choose any name and any letter.

How do you pronounce a foreign cat name?

Every foreign name in the generator comes with a simple pronunciation guide (Niamh is said “neev”, Saoirse “SEER-sha”) and a Listen button that reads it aloud with your device's voice for that language when one is available. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Hindi, Russian and Greek names are also shown in their original script.

Why is a specific letter required for pedigreed cats?

It's a French naming convention that started in the early 20th century for dogs, then was adopted by the LOOF registry for cats. It lets you tell an animal's birth year just from the initial of its official name. Each year moves to the next letter, skipping K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z.

Is the letter of the year mandatory?

Only for the official name of a cat registered with the LOOF (the one on the papers and pedigree). The everyday name you use at home can be anything you like. And if you fall for a name that doesn't start with the right letter, you can add the year's letter plus an apostrophe in front, like B'Java.

How do you find a name that fits a male or female cat?

Our generator offers a filter for male, female, or all names. Plenty of names are unisex (Bijou, Caramel, Zen) and work well for either. What matters most is that it's easy to call out and that you love it.

Can you change the name of an adopted cat?

Yes. An adopted or rescued cat adjusts well to a new name, especially if it's short and always paired with positive moments (mealtime, cuddles, playtime). Expect one to two weeks of gentle repetition before they respond to it.
